Good Afternoon,
Today was a great day to be outside. I hope you were able to enjoy your favorite snow activity in the sunshine and mild temps! I was definitely overdressed the first time I went out with the dog. The second time we had a lot of fun following fresh animal tracks all through the woods. It was a pleasant change from the ice that was forming before yesterday’s accumulation.
As mentioned last week, March is full of opportunities for students and families. You will find fliers attached for the following:
- Spring PES Spirit Wear
- Got Sneakers Fundraiser (6th Grade Class) - don’t throw those old sneakers away!
- Meriden Community Camp Offerings
Here are some other highlights:
COIN DRIVE - PTA BOOK FAIR
This week, we are pleased to kick off the coin drive (see attached flier) to raise funds to ensure all students are able to participate in the Scholastic Book Fair later in the week. Students love adding their spare change to see which class can raise the most money!
NEWSIES FOOD DRIVE As we get closer and closer to the Drama production, our school community is making connections with themes from Newsies. We wanted to share this New York Times article about current and concerning trends in child labor. Child labor laws originated during the era of the show. The students in the production are sponsoring a fundraiser/food drive and awareness campaign for The Haven and foster services in our area at the shows. We will share more info early this week.
Be sure to mark your calendars so you don’t miss Newsies. The show will be at the Briggs Opera House in White River Junction and should make for a wonderful family outing. Performances will take place March 31st and 1 pm and 7pm and April 1st at 7pm.
ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS, SPRING COACHES, & NEW SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
We will have an opportunity for fingerprinting @ PES Wednesday March 8th at 3:15pm.
KIDS HEART CHALLENGE (gr K-4) & AMERICAN HEARTH CHALLENGE (gr 5-8)
Heather Heinz is excited to launch the Heart Challenge here at PES. We need your help to accomplish our goal of having 100% of our families to know Hands-Only CPR, and you can help us by registering your child and spreading the word.
For our K-4 students, our goal is to have all students register online and complete Finn’s Mission. They’ll even earn a free wristband for registering! Plus, the classroom with the most students registered will win an XL Frankie Heart Hero!
Here’s how you can help:
Register: heart.org/KHC or http://www2.heart.org/goto/PlainfieldElementarySchoolMeridenNH
Complete Finn’s Mission: Watch a 2-minute video to know Hands-Only CPR, spot the signs of a stroke and more!
Share with friends and family through social media, text and/or email
For our 5th-8th students, the American Heart Challenge is an opportunity to do good, while feeling good. Students will take a heart healthy challenge and raise awareness and funds for things like congenital heart defects, nutrition security, CPR training, mental well-being and more as we work to end heart disease and stroke. Sign up today http://www.heart.org/AHC or http://www2.heart.org/goto/PlainfieldElementarySchoolMeridenNH1
Students will be getting more info from Ms. Heinz during PE/Health classes this week!
HEALTH SCREENING FORMS
If you have not already done so, be sure to return the vision and hearing screening forms ASAP. Nurse Beth has volunteers from River Valley Community College helping with the screening this week.
A VERY FOND FAREWELL
Last Friday was Mr. Pete’s last day at PES. As our Registered Behavior Technician, nearly all students had the opportunity to spend time with Mr. Pete. Whether helping resolve conflicts on the playground, supporting students who were having a tough day or simply going for a walk and talk, Mr. Pete could be relied on to lend an ear and a calming presence. He leaves some tough shoes to fill by our new RBT, Rory Weinstein. Our students shared a special farewell - lining the halls and sharing a cheer and plenty of high-fives - as Mr. Pete made his last (for now) walk through our halls. We wish Pete and his family well on their new adventures and careers in Tennessee! We will be posting the video this week. Warning - it made several of us cry!! Our students are truly the best!!
